“A great silence is spreading over the natural world even as the sound of man is becoming deafening” wrote the American musician and soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause about the extinction of species. His archive of field recordings spanning several decades shows that with every lost species the world becomes a little quieter.
Audio "Sculptor" and poem producer Antye Greie alias AGF dedicates her work to archiving dwindling soundscapes. In the virtual exhibition at GreenHouse NAXOS, for example, visitors can explore an adaptation of the work "Extinction Room" (2019) by Sergiu Matis for which AGF developed the sound. The installation interweaves images of extinct and endangered bird species into individual "Extinction Stories", which confront visitors on several sensual levels with the loss of the species and their unique voices.
Stories that remind us of the costs of the environmental crisis are also the focus of her Lab Module. AGF invites participants of the Second Nature Lab to discover their own environment with their ears, to preserve sounds for posterity - and to tell personal "extinction stories". Each participant is supported to develop an episode of an extinction story or environmental story of their own choosing. Each episode consists of a 1 min short sound work and a collection of facts and data to shed light on the issue of extinction. Together with AGF, you will explore creative possibilities of expressing hard facts, science and realities in artistic form and explore the impact of aesthetics. The workshop starts with a presentation by the artist laying out the possibilities and contexts. The results of the lab module will be published on the SECOND NATURE LAB platform and will be considered for publication on online platform rec-on.org, which was founded by AGF and is a space for "political sound works" and "political listening", where critical sound art voices are gathered.
